Goleta Without Redevelopment Money

Written by KEY News Staff

Goleta - The city of Goleta is getting ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary, with a big question.

How to move forward without redevelopment money?

Mayor Ed Easton spoke with the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday about the future of the city. Fortunately, funding for capital improvement projects such as the San Jose Creek Project and Ekwill-Fowler Project have been secured.

However, the loss of redevelopment money has forced Goleta to abandon any immediate upgrades to Old Town.

"When Goleta was formed, we had redevelopment before we were a city so much of the thinking about our success as a city and making things better especially in Old Town, revolved around redevelopment," said Mayor Easton.

On a more positive note, February 1st is the 10- year anniversary for Goleta. The city plans to hold a number of events over the next two weeks to celebrate.

January 31 - Goleta Homeowner Workshop & BBQ

Feb. 2 & 3 - Digital Book Mobile @ Camino Real Marketplace

Feb. 7 - Official 10th anniversary celebration @ Goleta City Council Meeting.

Feb. 12 - Community Birthday Party

Feb. 14 - The Launch of "Love your Neighbor, Know Your Neighbor Program". Also known as nextdoor.com, is a free, private, neighborhood-based social media site.
