Fungicide In Orange Juice

Written by Shirin Rajaee

Santa Barbara- The Food and Drug Administration is testing all orange juice entering the U.S, after low levels of the fungicide Carbendazim were found in the juice.

Carbendazim is not approved for use in the U.S, but is approved in Brazil.

KEY News sat down with the Medical Director for Infection Prevention at Cottage Health System to see if this posed a health risk.

Coca-Cola, which makes popular brands Minute Maid and Simply Orange, was the first to kick off this FDA probe.

The FDA says, the levels of the discovered fungicide are low, and there's no health hazard to humans and no products have been recalled.

The chemical, Carbendazim, is outlawed in the U.S as it's been linked to the development of liver tumors, and testicular disorders in laboratory animals- but it's in wide use in other parts of the world

Doctor David Fisk says there's no need to be alarmed. The data is reassuring, only very few samples were contaminated.
Dr. Fisk adds that he's more concerned about problems like E coli and Salmonella poisoning.

Here are a few tips to avoid Food Borne Illnesses:

1. Buy foods as fresh as possible
2. Wash hands after handling raw food.
3. Keep cooked and ready-to-eat foods separate
from raw meats
4. Wipe down surfaces well after handling raw chicken, egg or uncooked meat
5. Cook meat thoroughly
