Paving The Way For Roadwork And Jobs

Many workers are getting good jobs with stimulus money

KEYT Reporter

Santa Barbara - Potholed plagued streets are getting more asphalt than many residents have seen in years. The work is being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

It's put many people, some unemployed, into well paying jobs. Crews on the Santa Barbara Riviera have been patching up the traffic battered road this week. Recently they repaved and restriped an area of upper State Street.

"I have a lot of calls from guys who are out of work right now. They want to come on this job. We're on the tail end of it now. But everyone's happy that some how, some way, we got some funding for it, so we're moving right along," said Sergio Carrillo with Nye and Nelson Company in Ventura. His crew has been hired for several jobs.

Attorney Kris Kallman says money spent on the bulb outs being constructed on many downtown street corners is "a waste." He says they do nothing but possibly cause more accidents, "which is good for my business since I am a personal injury lawyer."

The City of Santa Barbara has a map on it's web page detailing all of the projects underway, where the funding has come from and when they will be done.

Senior Reporter John Palminteri has more in his his video report:
