Flurry of Accidents in the New Year

Written by KEYT Anchor

January 1st brought in a flurry of car accidents, soon after the clock struck midnight.

One female driver crashed through a fence and into Break Time Bar in Goleta around 3 am. Authorities say she was taken into custody for driving under the influence, but she was unharmed.

Another driver flew over the side of highway 154, about 10 miles west of Lake Cachuma.

"She was wearing her seat belt," Firefighter Matt Stoddard says, "so she was still contained inside the vehicle and we found her with minor injuries."

Other car accidents today were met with fatalities, including a 19-year-old passenger in Templeton, and a 21-year-old man near Lake Nacimiento. And an unidentified victim was killed in Santa Maria when his or her car lost control near Stowell road, flipped and landed in a field, where it caught fire.

KEY News reporter Sharon Weston has more on the day's tragedies.
