Council Approves Purchase of Detox Facility

Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

The Santa Barbara City Council visited a property Tuesday morning which could become a detox facility run by the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

Earlier this month the city's Finance Committee voted 2-1 to approve the use of $865,000 in funds for the Housing Authority to purchase a home on the 1000 block of Placido.

The Finance Committee recommended the Housing Authority hold an additional community outreach meeting for residents living near the property and asked the City Council to make a visit to the site prior to Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The Santa Barbara City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday afternoon to approve an $865,000 grant of Redevelopment Agency Funds for the Housing Authority to purchase the home.

In response to a number of resident's voicing concerns over the facility operating in their neighborhood, Mayor Helene Schneider said those worries would be addressed once the permitting process begins to move forward.
