Controversial Starbucks Sign

Logo sign is bigger than what other businesses were allowed

Written by John Palminteri

Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara has a tough sign ordinance downtown and the area is technically called the El Pueblo Viejo District where letters on signs are limited in most case to 10 inches. But one has gone up that's larger than others.

The city rules cover many aspects of signs such as lighting, logos and just how much signage is allowed on the buildings.

This new Starbucks on Carrillo had its sign program approved by the city but now local leaders are giving it a second look after seeing a large logo sign on the building.

The city admits the logo sign, for example, should have been smaller but also says when the company submitted its plan it was discussed and supported.

Now Santa Barbara planners say they are working with Starbucks on a possible solution which could include a smaller sign like the one you see at the Cota Street Starbucks.

We called Starbucks Headquarters for a comment and have not heard back from them.
