Congresswoman Capps Healthcare Birthday Celebration Today

Written by KEYT Producer

The new health care law turned one today.

There was controversy leading up to the signing of the health care bill and it hasn't died down yet.

Critics claim it has a mandate that is unconstitutional.

During a roundtable discussion on the anniversary health care providers at Cen-Cal in Santa Barbara Congresswoman Lois Capps said it probably will end up in the Supreme Court.

But Capps says the constitution allows states to do things that add to the welfare of their people.

The congresswoman says the law has already given tax breaks to small businesses and helped insure local children with pre-existing conditions.

Capps says some insurance companies have raised rates because they see 2014 coming when the entire law takes effect.

By then supporters say rates should go down because there will be more competition and people will have greater access to preventative care.

Congresswoman Lois Capps will join families from around the community to say "Happy Birthday" to health care.

Today, Capps is holding a birthday celebration and roundtable discussion to commemorate the first anniversary of health care reform.

The congresswoman will talk about the benefit the law has had on families including getting feedback from parents who are most concerned about health care.

The event starts this afternoon at 3:00 pm at Shoreline Park in Santa Barbara. But due to the weather, an alternate location may be announced later this morning.
