The Modern Master Award was created to honor an individual who has enriched culture through his or her accomplishments in the motion picture industry.

"It's somebody I've always wanted to honor, it's somebody I've always wanted to cherish and celebrate and this year is his year," said Roger Durling, SBIFF Executive Director.

Christopher Plummer recently won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "Beginner" and has also been nominated for an Oscar. However, he may be most well known for his role as the father in "The Sound of Music."

"Beginner", also has a Santa Barbara connection. Director Mike Mills was born and raised on the Central Coast and based the character that Plummer plans on his own father.

"My father was the director of the art museum. He walked these streets, took me to the Arlington to see Star Wars and many films, so it's a very strange coming together of my dad, Christopher and me," said Mills.

Previous recipients of the Modern Master Award include Michael Douglas, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sean Penn, Jeff Bridges and George Clooney.
