Cold Spring Canyon Bridge Suicide Barrier Debate

Written by KEYT Anchor

A symbol of the Santa Ynez Valley is at the center of fierce debate. Some want suicide-preventing safety measures constructed along the Cold Spring Canyon Bridge but not everyone agrees on what they should look like.

'Friends of the Cold Spring Bridge', an activist group opposed to it, filed a civil lawsuit to stop construction on a vertical grid-mesh barrier along the bridge and won.

The judge ruled that Caltrans didn't address enough visual options or allow enough time for public input. Caltrans has since updated its environmental impact report (EIR) and is sharing it with the public again. It will take the new input back to court in hopes proceeding with construction.

'Friends of the Cold Spring Bridge' say they support the idea of a barrier, but want horizontal netting instead of something vertical that would obstruct views.
