Blockbuster Closures

Written by KEYT Producer

The Blockbuster video rental store at Five Points Center in Santa Barbara is closing. Customers say the store is selling all of its movies and fixtures. They also say employees tell them the Milpas Street location will remain open. Employees at a Blockbuster store on Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria also say they're closing. They tell KEY News that a store on upper State Street and a store in Ojai are closing as well.

Blockbuster released the following statement about the closures: "Blockbuster continues to evaluate the performance of each store location individually. As we have said in previous statements, we remain committed to maintaining only those stores that we believe we will be able to operate profitably ... For employees of any closing stores, we intend to relocate as many employees as possible to other stores."

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy protection last year. Published reports say the popularity of "On Demand" and mail order movies have hurt the store chain.
