Update: Arrest Made For New Year's Day Isla Vista Firebombing

Written by Kateri Wozny

Isla Vista - Santa Barbara Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a man for the News Year’s Day firebombing at the Isla Vista Foot Patrol (IVFP).

Sheriff’s officials say Keith Keiper, 23, of Isla Vista, was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for felony arson of an inhabited dwelling. Keiper has been in custody since Jan. 25. He was arraigned on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty. His bail is set at $250,000.

Keiper, a UCSB senior, is believed to have worked alone when he threw a Molotov cocktail at the front of the IVFP Office. No one was hurt in the incident but the building suffered minor damage.

A similar attack also occurred on Nov. 15, 2011 and sheriff's officials say they cannot confirm or rule out if the two incidents are similar. The FBI is currently offering a $5,000 reward for that case.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office at 805-681-4100, the Sheriff’s Anonymous Tip Line at 805-681-4171 or the FBI at 805-642-3995.
