Another Brown Pelican Dies Due To Injuries

Written by Kateri Wozny

Ventura - Another brown pelican has died due to injuries, this time in Ventura.

Officials with the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network say the decomposed body of the pelican washed up on a shore in Ventura possibly a week ago. The pelican, a 3-year-old female, suffered a broken beak, both wings broken and its pouch ripped off.

Five brown pelicans have turned up with broken wings over the past two weeks at the Santa Barbara waterfront. Animal experts believe the breaks were human-caused and intentional.

The first injured pelican showed up on Jan. 10 and over the next three days four more pelicans with the same injuries and breaks in the exact same place were found in Santa Barbara.

Wildlife officials say they quickly realized the injuries were not accidental and all appeared to be inflicted by a human. They tell KEY News the breaks were so severe all of the birds had to be euthanized.

It is unknown when and where the pelican in Ventura was injured.

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network is offering a $1,000 reward for the person(s) responsible for this crime. Anyone with more information can call 805-681-1080.
