Surfer is Attacked by Shark

KEYT Producer

Pismo Beach- Authorities in Pismo Beach are warning beachgoers to be on the lookout for sharks this holiday weekend. The warning comes
after a surfer was bitten by a shark.

A 19-year-old surfer says a shark bit him on the foot shortly before 7:00 p.m. Friday night at Shell Beach near Silver Shoals.

The victim says the shark was about 4 feet long, and was brown with dark spots. Officials say advisories are now posted, but beaches in the area will remain open.

BACKGROUND: The National Park Service is warning surfers, snorkelers and swimmers of the possibility of great white sharks in area waters. The warning comes after more shark sightings, and sea lion attacks

On three separate occasions, sea lions were attacked by great whites off Santa Barbara Island, a popular snorkeling area about 40 miles south of Ventura.

Last Saturday, a great white attacked a sea lion just a mile off shore from Santa Barbara's East Beach. Then on Sunday, a great white pup washed ashore at Rincon Beach.

Marine Conservation Science Institute president Michael Domeier says pregnant females give birth this time of year in shallow California waters.
