Santa Barbara - A Great White Shark attacked a sea lion off the coast of Santa Barbara over the weekend. .

The injured sea lion was taken to the Marine Mammal Center were it had to be euthanized. Experts say it's a reminder that Great White Sharks are out there in local waters.

East Beach, one of Santa Barbara's most popular summer destinations was crowded all weekend. The shark attack on Saturday, occurred about a quarter to a half mile off the coast of the beach.

The injured sea lion was ambushed from below according to scientists. They say the two year old male was bitten twice but survived and was found hanging from a buoy.

Peter Howorth, Director of The Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center had the necessary job of euthanizing the injured sea lion. Similar attacks have occurred in local waters the past few years, says Howorth. He claims a juvenile great white shark committed the latest attack.
