Pathway Improvement Project Fuels Debate

KEYT Anchor

A local pedestrian pathway project is generating debate. Some say it's overdue and will improve safety and accessibility. But those opposed say it's excessive, intrusive and waste of money.

At issue is the future of a pedestrian pathway in Montecito that meanders alongside a 3-thousand foot stretch of San Ysidro Road.

Since it was awarded with a Federal "Safe Routes To School Grant", Santa Barbara County has been working with Montecito leaders on an improvement project targeting the pedestrian pathway primarily used by school children. It's currently not readily accessible for some people, forcing them to walk into adjacent bike lanes or onto busy San Ysidro Road.

Opponents worry that proposed changes to the pathway threaten the area's cherished semi-rural aesthetics. But proponents say they wont and site improved public safety features.

Tuesday night, Santa Barbara County hosted an informational public meeting looking for more input on the project. The County will share that input with the Montecito Association Land Use Committee during its July 6th meeting.
