Cash For Appliances Program Begins

Written by KEYT Anchor

California's Cash for Appliances program kicks off Thursday, and consumers are being urged to act quickly.

California's share of the $300 million federally funded program is $35 million, and in some states the money has run out in a few days.

Consumers must purchase the appliance from a California retailer between April 22 and May 23. Consumers have 30 days from the date of purchase to mail in a claim form to receive the rebate.

By replacing old appliances with energy efficient ones, California consumers could receive rebates of $200 on refrigerators, $100 on clothes washers, and $50 on room air-conditioners. Old appliances must be recycled and removed from the energy grid.

The California Energy Commission managing the money made from the program has set up a website which includes a tracker to let consumers and retailers know how much money is left.

It's estimated that the program could generate over $170 million in economic activity for California, and remove almost 280 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
