Health Care Debate

KEYT Production

As America awaits the historic vote on Health Care Reform sunday night, there is no shortage of opinion on Capitol Hill, across the country, or here at home.

A final vote is expected sometime sunday night, and whether or not the new healthcare bill will be put into place, both parties are doing everything they can before the historic vote.

As President Obama makes his final push to pass healthcare. Democrats are confident the votes will be there if the bill passes it would cover some 30 million uninsured people.

It would also prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions and require almost all Americans to get coverage by law but local republicans say this bill wont work.

To be clear: There are two measures before the House dealing with President Obama' s top domestic priority. One is the Senate's version of health care, which passed that chamber on Christmas Eve. Because of a deal struck earlier today between the White House and anti-abortion Democrats, the House is expected to have the 216 votes needed to pass the Senate bill.

The second measure is the House's new health care legislation, which revises the Senate bill more to Obama's liking. It would spend $940 billion over 10 years to expand health insurance coverage to 32 million Americans and provide $138 billion in deficit reduction.

The House votes tonight on these measures will supersede its November action, when mostly Democrats and one Republican passed the original House health care bill on a 220-215 vote.

(By the way, buried in the new House health care bill is an unrelated but also sweeping measure that rewrites the rules dealing with college loans for needy students.)

Health care then moves to the Senate, where Democrats are expected to use special rules that would require only 51 votes to pass a bill
