Chief Deputy Dennis Carpenter is running against commander Geoff Dean.
Carpenter is not related to a former sheriff with the same last name.
But Carpenter has the backing of retiring Sheriff Bob Brooks and many top executives.

While Dean has the backing of many rank and file officers and several police chiefs.

This is the county's first contested race in more than three decades.
Retiring Sheriff Bob Brooks make more than 200 thousand dollars a year and oversees more than 740 officers.
