Four Santa Barbara Co. Schools "Persistantly Low-Achieving"

KEYT Producer

Four Santa Barbara County schools have been identified as low-performing and needing to adopt major reforms or close entirely. The state Department of Education released a preliminary list of 188 of the state's "persistently low-achieving schools" Monday.

Cesar Estrada Chavez Dual Language Immersion Charter School in Santa Barbara is on the list. Adam (William Laird) Elementary, Alvin Elementary and Calvin C. Oakley Elementary in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District are also listed.

Some schools could be replaced by others before the list is finalized by the state Board of Education on Thursday.

The schools will have to implement reform measures that could include replacing the principal, closing and sending students to other schools, or closing and reopening as a charter school.

The schools on the list will be eligible to apply for federal school improvement grants ranging from $50,000 to $2 million. California has about 10,000 public schools.
