Santa Barbara Woman Accused in Infant's Death

Christina Heller

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Redondo Beach police say they have
arrested the mother of a newborn found dumped in a curbside trash
bin.

Sgt. Phil Keenan said 24-year-old Jessie Canfield was arrested
Wednesday afternoon, after trash collectors found the infant's body
Wednesday morning.

Keenan says investigators don't know if the baby girl was alive
when she was dumped.

He says Canfield attended a party in her hometown of Redondo
Beach over the weekend and had complained of cramping and
discomfort.

Homicide investigators have determined that she gave birth. They
say Canfield was living with her sister in Santa Barbara and will
be taken to jail in Redondo Beach.

The coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine how the baby
died.
