Arrest Made In Connection To Deadly Gang Brawl

Christina Heller

Santa Maria, CA-- Police say they have the prime suspect in custody, who they believe stabbed to death down an 18-year-old from Lompoc, in December.

Santa Maria Police arrested 19-year-old Javier Venegas, of Santa Maria, the night after a large, gang fight claimed the life of Erik Alonso.

Investigators say, while Venegas was in custody on unrelated charges, they obtained information linking him to Alonso's murder.

On December 12th, it's alleged that Venegas and Alonso were both involved in a melee between rival gang members from Santa Maria and Lompoc. During the fight Alonso was fatally stabbed.

Alonso's death sparked community concern over a recent spike in gang-related attacks. Many called for the Police Department to institute a gang-injunction for the City. Police say a gang-injunction is not the answer.

However, late last month, the Police Department held the first of several Gang Town Hall Meetings, inviting the public to get involved.
