Memorial Service Set For Renowned UCSB Professor

Goleta, CA-- Memorial services are scheduled for the late Luis Leal, a distinguished UC Santa Barbara Professor of Chicano and Chicana Studies.

Leal, 102, passed away earlier this week. He is best known for the 45 books and 400 articles he has written on topics pertaining to Latino and Chicano Studies subject matter.

A visitation is scheduled for Monday, February 1st, at the First Christian Church in Santa Barbara, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Following Monday's visitation, a graveside service will be held in Goleta at 3 p.m., at the Goleta Cemetery, located at 44 S. San Antonio Road.

Officials at UC Santa Barbara say plans for a campus memorial are still being worked out.

Leal was born in 1907, in Linares, Mexico. He first began teaching at UCSB in 1976. In 1997, Professor Leal was honored with National Humanities Medal, by president Bill Clinton.
