Venoco's Carpinteria Project may be Put to a Vote

Mike Waller

A proposed slant drilling project on the Carpinteria coast could be approved by the City Council Monday night.

The issue could also go to the voters.

Venoco wants to go after coastal oil and gas reserves but not with a new offshore platform.

Instead, the plan is to drill from an on-shore location in Carpinteria out to the underwater supplies.

Unlike other proposals proposed over the years, in this case Venoco wants its project to go right to to the voters for a decision.

The issue is very contentious in Carpinteria.

The City Council can vote to approve the project or put it on the ballot for a city wide election next year.
