Group Pushes For Canonization Of Evangelist

Christina Heller

Montecito, CA-- Some local Catholics are joining a nationwide effort to have an American Archbishop proclaimed a saint.

A canonization ceremony was held Wednesday night at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen is considered the first televangelist. He started his radio show in 1930, then moved to television in 1951. He reached an estimated 30-million viewers a week. Sheen died in 1979.

The final decision to make him a saint will rest with church officials in Rome.
