Volunteerism Offers Residents a Way to Give During the Holidays

John Palminteri

Many local residents may not have the cash, but they have the time to volunteer over the holidays. This week we have found many people who want to help make the season better for everyone.

From Pismo Beach, to Santa Barbara and into Ventura County we have found residents, some of them for the first time, coming out to help feed the needy at a time when the demand is increasing.

Among those serving dinners at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission is local resident and philanthropist Gerd Jordano who has also been encouraging young people to begin donating time for others.

Writer Richard Mineards was scooping mashed potatoes onto one of about 200 plates of food that went by and said, "it keeps your feet on the ground and realizing it's not all yachts, planes, polo and cocktail parties but there is another side to life and you see it so vividly when come and volunteer."
