Local Students Join Thousands In LA To Protest UC Fee Hikes

Christina Heller

Westwood, CA-- With their blinds drawn, University of California Regents approved fee hikes while thousands of students from all ten campuses protested outside.

KEYT's cameras were there, as three hundred students from UC Santa Barbara joined in a march that stopped traffic. Then they rallied in front of riot police protecting the regents meeting on the UCLA campus.

By early afternoon they learned that the regents voted to hike fees 32-percent to more than $10,000 dollars a year.

Regents have said that some of the fees will bolster financial aid, but students say that won't help the middle class.

After the vote students didn't leave. Instead they blocked ever door and parking exit so that the regent can't easily leave.

KEY News Ventura Bureau Chief Tracy Lehr just returned from Westwood and has the story.
