City Wants To Fence Off Popular Ball Park

Written by Christina Heller

Santa Barbara, CA-- The homeless community is one step closer to being ousted from a popular hang-out spot, if the Parks and Recreation Department has its way.

The bleachers at the Cabrillo ball field is a home-base, of sorts, for homeless people during the day. And some say that's a problem.

Police cite daily calls for alcohol and drug use among the homeless in that area. Officials say ball players have their share of problems with the homeless, too.

On Thursday night, the Parks Commission gave approval for a fencing project, that would go around the bleachers and bathrooms.

Homeless people we spoke with say putting up a six foot fence to keep them out, is wrong.

Parks and Recreation staffers will try to fund the 25,000 fence through a grant.

If approved, the money wouldn't be available until July of next year.
