Failure Of Sales Tax Hike To Blame For Loss Of Public Safety Services

Christina Heller

Ventura, CA-- The failure of a half-cent sales tax hike in Ventura is taking its toll. This week, the city council cut two public safety programs.

The city will save $180,000 a year by cutting its roving medic engine and several Police Department Foot Patrols. Volunteers in policing, known as "VIP's," say they'll try to pick up the slack.

Ventura's Fire Chief says people may feel the effect of the cuts when it comes to response times.

The city applied for federal stimulus money earmarked for public safety, but it has not come through.

KEY News Ventura County Bureau Chief Tracy Lehr has more on these cuts.
