KEY Assignment: Getting That Extra Job
Santa Barbara, CA-- In these tight economic times, a second job might just help make ends meet, and in some cases you may even need a third or a fourth one.
In a KEY News Special Assignment , Senior Reporter John Palminteri found one man who is working four jobs. He not only makes some extra cash, but has found work he enjoys with a passion. Anthony Prieto starts his day at 3:30 am working for the City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department. He and a crew are on the streets, painting curbs, installing signs and striping roads throughout the city. "We want to get out there and take care of stuff before the morning rush starts and we don't want to inconvenience anybody," said Prieto. He and others have accepted an unpaid work furlough of 13 days to help the city deal with it's dwindling funds, and to save as many positions as possible in every department. By working other jobs, "it makes things a litte easier" he says. " Five years ago we weren't even thinking of this." Prieto also has a band, that plays Latin, Soul and Romantic Chicano songs at festivals throughout the area. "It's an extension of what God has given me as far as talent<" Prieto says. He hopes it inspires other youth. Some afternoons he can also be found on the basketball court at Crane School, coaching young athletes. It's where he attended and says "If I can give back to the school what they gave to me, it's really important." Across town, at the Santa Barbara Zoo another project recently took flight. Prieto has just finished a full sized mural of a California Condor next to the new Condor exhibit. As an artist, it allows him to show another side of his creativity and make some extra money on the side. How long can all this last? Prieto says he hopes to be able to do many jobs, especially ones he is passionate about, for years to come. " I wish there were 28 hours in the day, instead of 24. Eight days in a week instead of seven." Tune into KEY News news at 6 and 11for our special report, "Getting That Extra Job." |
