Officials Launch Arson Investigation Into Wharf Fires
Santa Barbara, CA-- Early Thursday morning, firefighters were called to Stearns Wharf after a CHP officer saw flames near the base of the wharf.
The officers used portable fire extinguishers from their patrol cars to douse two small fires by a ticket kiosk before firefighters and Harbor Patrol arrived. Once on scene fire crews with the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, saw smoke coming from several other areas on the pier. That's when they saw large flames shoot up near Long Board's Grill and the Harbor Restaurant. Fire crews with the help of other agencies, were able to quickly put out those flames before they caused any significant damage to the 137-year-old structure. Fire investigators told KEY News they are looking a suspect or several suspects associated with the fires. Early reports indicate people were seen fleeing the pier while firefighters were on scene.
