Nurses To Strike Locally Over Swine Flu Concerns

Christina Heller

Santa Maria, CA-- Nurses across the State of California are threatening a one-day strike because of what they say, is a lack of H1N1 preparedness.

The California Nurses Association says nurses at 34 hospitals will walk-out on Friday October 30th, because swine flu protection recommendations are have not been included in their contracts.

Locally nurses at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, and French Hospital
are expected to participate in the state-wide strike.

The 16,000 plus nurses say if state and federal swine flu protection recommendations are included in their contracts, then they will call off the strike.

The nurse's complaints stem from poor access to protective masks following the death of a Sacramento nurse, who caught the virus in July. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend those treating patients infected with the flu wear specialized masks.
