Shuttle To Land Just Before 6 PST At Edwards, Expect Sonic Boom

Christina Heller

LOS ANGELES (AP) - NASA says people in Southern California may hear a strong sonic boom if the space shuttle Discovery lands at Edwards Air Force Base in the desert north of Los Angeles.

Mission Control ordered Discovery to prepare for a California landing Friday evening because of bad weather at the primary landing site in Florida.

NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center says a sonic boom could be generated over a wide area of the coastline from south of San Luis Obispo to south of Los Angeles, and inland over portions of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and Kern counties.

The first landing opportunity is at 5:53 p.m. PDT.
