Alys Martinez

One suspect is in custody after allegedly firing a gun at a CHP officer in El Rio Tuesday.

About 11 am this morning, a CHP officer in the El Rio area, near Oxnard attempted to pull over a vehicle because one of the two occupants was not wearing a seat belt. CHP directed the vehicle to pull over at a Circle K gas station at Vineyard and Collins. After a verbal confrontation with the officer, one of the occupants bolted from the vehicle and gave chase. The other occupant sat quietly in the car.

The CHP officer chased after the suspect and according to police that individual brandished a weapon. Gunfire rang out between the two, but no one was hit. The suspect ran into a residential neighborhood prompting a lockdown of five local elementary schools. Oxnard police, Ventura County Sheriff's and additional CHP officers responded. After an exhaustive search of the area, the suspect was located approximately one mile from the gas station and taken into custody.
