Oxnard Honors Larry King One Year After Death

Mike Waller

Thursday, February 12, marks the one year anniversary of the shooting death of 15 year old Lawrence King in Oxnard.

Reports indicate King was killed by E.O. Green classmate, Brandon McInerney, 15, because he was gay. After his death, nearly 200 vigils were held in King's honor in all 50 states.

Also in honor of King, Congresswoman Lois Capps (D) issued legislation and spoke on the House floor, calling for an end to violence and harassment directed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

"Larry's murder is particularly painful because it happened at his school, a place that should have been a sacred space where he could grow and learn in a safe and supportive environment," Capps said in a released statement. "We have to do better by our children and do more to protect our friends and neighbors who too often face this harassment alone. Larry's death is a tragedy but I hope we continue to be driven by his memory to end this despicable violence."

E.O. Green has organized a vigil for Thursday night in King's memory. The group will meet at 6:00 p.m. at 856 E. Thompson Blvd. and end at the pier. School officials at E.O. Green say the school plans to hold vigil each February 12 to make sure people remember King's death and help engage leaders and educators in the hope of ensuring safe schools and communities for LBGT youth.

Tuesday, the attorney for McInerney requested the state court of appeal move the case to juvenile court. The appeal came after a judge ruled in favor of trying McInerney as an adult.
