News-Press Charges Against Union Dismissed

Written by Christina Heller

Santa Barbara, CA-- According to a press release sent out Monday afternoon, the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board has dismissed five charges the Santa Barbara News-Press filed against the Graphics Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The charges claimed unfair labor practice in relation to the Union's boycott activity against the paper. The Union was contacted in August of 2006 by employees of the embattled newspaper, to help with what former employees called, "restoring journalist integrity to the paper."

Members of the Union along with former and current employees participated in boycott activity, such as distributing fliers along with contacting advertisers and customers of the paper. The boycotts were staged in hopes that advertisers and subscribers would cancel their accounts and subscriptions until the paper reached a fair agreement with the Union representing the newsroom employees.

The News-Press claimed the Union's boycott activity was threatening and coercive to advertisers and customers and the paper suffered financial losses because of the Union activity.

At this time, Barry Capello the attorney representing the News-Press told KEY News he has no comment in on the NLRB decision.
