Jury Reaches Verdict In SLO Organ Harvesting Case
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - A transplant surgeon who was alleged to have hastened the death of a man so his organs could be harvested has been acquitted of dependent adult abuse.
A San Luis Obispo jury on Thursday found Dr. Hootan Roozrokh not guilty after deliberating for more than two days. The 34-year-old faced up to four years in prison if he was convicted. The case was believed to be the first of its kind brought against a transplant doctor in the United States. Roozrokh was accused of prescribing too much medication to Ruben Navarro, who was in his mid-20s when he died in February 2006 at a San Luis Obispo hospital. His kidneys and liver were ultimately never harvested. Two other felony counts were dismissed in March by Superior Court Judge Martin Tangeman. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
