LocalCity Leaders Brainstorm Over Budget Deficit Solutions
Santa Barbara, CA-- Even with a growing debt the City of Santa Barbara says, there will not be any layoffs, for now.
When they saw the newest numbers amounting to a debt of about $5.4 million it was described by City Councilmember Iya Falcone, as "doom, heading for gloom." The funding drop shows up in sales tax, transient occupancy tax, fees and services. There's even a drop in money from parking tickets. As for solutions, some money has been found to ease the problem. Those dollars are from unused worker compensations funds and a surplus in the money made on tickets generated from the street sweeping program. City leaders have said they want frequent updates on the budget problems, so they can plan for the future. Recently each department head was asked to make budget cuts of six percent. The Mayor and Council will cut 30 percent from their budgets. KEY News Senior Reporter John Palminteri has more on this story. |
