California Democrats Try Again For Tax Increase
SACRAMENTO (AP) - Democratic lawmakers are trying again to solve
California's massive budget deficit. Assembly Speaker Karen Bass says the Assembly will vote on a $19 billion package Tuesday afternoon that relies on a temporary 1½ percent sales tax increase. Her plan still doesn't have the needed Republican support. But the Los Angeles Democrat says she might lock lawmakers in the Capitol if that's what it takes to get a budget deal. California faces a projected $42 billion shortfall in the next 18 months. Republicans last month rejected a Democratic proposal that included a higher fee on vehicle registrations. The new Democratic plan includes nearly $7 billion in cuts and $11 billion in new revenue from a three-year sales tax increase, a tax on oil and a nickel on every alcoholic drink.
