Drilling Project Moves Forward

An offshore drilling project west of Lompoc and Vandenberg Air Force Base is one step closer to breaking ground.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted 4 to 1 to deny appeals against the PXP offshore oil drilling project.

Opponents wanted the board to overturn the planning commission's decision, which approved the project.

Plains Exploration and Production Company worked out a landmark agreement with environmental groups to pump out up to 150 million barrels of oil from an area called the Tranquillon Ridge.
