Bus Riders Will Be Shelling Out More Cash

Christina Heller

Bus fares will be going up in Santa Barbara, but not as much as originally feared. The rising cost of diesel fuel and an increase in riders has put a strain on the Metropolitan Transit District. The MTD had proposed increasing cash fares from a $1.25 to $2.00. After hearing input from a coalition of community-based groups the MTD board decided on smaller fee hikes. Cash fares will increase to $1.75, cash fares for seniors and the disabled will jump from 60 to 85 cents and ten ride passes will now cost $11.50. The changes take effect January 1st of 2009.
