Written by Kateri Wozny

Sacramento - County jails that are wishing for more funding to expand their jails will now have a chance to apply for it.

The California Department of Corrections (DOC) says 25 counties can apply for Phase II Jail Construction Funding. There is $603 million available from the state for counties to expand jail-bed space.

Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, Kern, Sacramento, Santa Clara, Fresno, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tulare, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Yolo, Sonoma, Placer, Kings, Shasta, Sutter, Madera, Imperial, Napa, Amador, San Benito, Siskiyou and Tuolumne Counties were invited to apply.

The counties were selected based on criteria in the request for applications. They have until Jan. 12. to apply and it will be announced in March which counties will get some of the funding.

The funding will be provided through AB 900, also known as the Public Safety and Offender Rehabilitation Services Act of 2007. AB 900 provides $7.7 billion to add up to 53,000 prison and jail beds to reduce prison overcrowding.

The DOC has already provided $617 million to 11 counties under Phase I to add more than 5,000 county jail beds statewide.
