07/09/08 11:00AM FIRE Update: FIRE STATS, RESOURCES AND CURRENT STATUS

Fire Stats Acres burned: 9,785 Acreage increase (last 12 hours): 75 Fireline to build: 7 miles Date started: 07/01/2008 5:45 p.m. Percent contained: 55% Expected containment: unknown Injuries: 6 Structures threatened: 251 Structures destroyed: 4 Suppression cost to date: $12.6 million Cause: Human caused, under investigation RESOURCES: Crews: 52 Engines: 87 Aircraft: 14 Dozers: 15 Total Personnel Assigned: 1128 MANDATORY EVACUATIONS: A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for West Camino Cielo west of the Windemere Ranch to the actual fire area. CURRENT STATUS: •The Incident Command Post has moved its location from the Earl Warren Showgrounds to the Dos Pueblos High School •Burnout operations near the Winchester Gun Club were successful, reinforcing the northernmost control line. An infrared flight last night confirmed some hot spots remain on the east side of the fire, and firefighters will continue securing the line and mopping up that area. Crews will continue to mop up the southern portion of the line along the foothills. •The northwest and west flanks of the fire are expected to burn actively as temperatures increase and humidity decreases today. Structure protection crews are in place, and firefighters will attempt to keep the fire north of structures and subdivisions. •Planning for western movement of the fire remains a high priority. • The Gap Fire started in the West Camino Cielo area late Tuesday afternoon, 4 miles west of State Highway 154 and 3.5 miles north of Goleta, CA in the Los Padres National Forest. • Fire is burning in 30-50 year old heavy chaparral fuels (15-20 feet tall), in extremely steep and rocky terrain. •An American Red Cross evacuation center has been established at San Marcos High School at 4750 Hollister Avenue, at the intersection of Turnpike Road and Hollister Avenue. •The Santa Barbara County Animal Services will operate an emergency animal shelter at the Red Cross evacuation center location. Individuals who stay at the evacuation center can bring their household pets (dogs, cats, etc.) to this animal shelter.
