McCain Met by Protesters at Energy Session
Anti oil protesters waved signs, and used a public address system to get the attention of Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain during a Santa Barbara visit.
The Santa Barbara Channel was the scene of a major offshore oil accident in 1969, when a blowout on the ocean floor caused widespread damage to marine life and the nearby coast. McCain said he supported more offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters as part of an energy plan that also included research and development of alternative energy supplies. The protesters called it lip service. "So it's just pandering to the voters. Try to get as many votes by doing something people will think is a solution. We understand that this oil won't be in production for five, 10 or 15 years. It won't do anything for the present situation," said Charles Eckberg who has opposed offshore oil for more than 30 years. Among those speaking in favor of renewable and clean energy projects, were City Councilmembers Grant House, Helene Schneider and Das Williams. There were also members of Get Oil Out, and organization that began in 1969 when the disastrous spill occurred. Some of the areas strongest environmentalists were allowed into the event, and had seats in the audience to hear the candidates message. Senior Reporter John Palminteri has our story. |
