Neighborhood Braces For Fire Season

Neighborhood Braces For Fire Season

One Goleta Valley neighborhood, is not waiting for the next big disaster.
It's pulling everyone who lives in the area together to prepare and plan to either evacuate or shelter in place if a disaster occurs.
Many of the residents lost their homes on San Antonio Road during the devastating Painted Cave Fire on June 27, 1990. That fire killed one resident and wiped out 600 homes and businesses in one night.
Resident Regina Magid said, "this is a spread out neighborhood and many neighbors did not know each other. We have a strong sense of community. My theory is, if we know each other better then we will be more helpful to each other in case of a disaster."
Several neighbors have met for briefing sessions, purchased walkie-talkies and set up street captains to over see the homes in their area.
And in a fast moving fire, or after an earthquake you may not have much time to react.
"If you are confronted by a fire that has sprung on you in a hurry, you need to be prepared to deal with that." said Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Eli Iskow. "There's a wildfire action plan (on the County Fire web site) with guidelines that you need to think about ahead of time"
The front country fires are particularly dangerous. "They start in minutes. They're on homes. They're in homes, " Iskow said.
The residents on San Antonio Road say they will be staging a drill on June 7th, to evacuate about 200 residents into Tucker's Grove Park.

The official start of high fire season has been declared. Extra resources including hand crews, bulldozers and aircraft will be called out at the first sign of smoke.
Local Fire Chiefs meet next week to talk about their mutual aid agreements, resources, weather predictions and other issues relating to the fire season ahead.

Senior Reporter John Palminteri has spent time in one front country neighborhood and has our report.
