LocalUPDATE: Small Boat Capsized, One Man Missing
UPDATE: The United States Coast Guard, Santa Barbara County and City Firefighters along with the Harbor Patrol are continuing to search the waters off the coast of Santa Barbara after a small boat capsized Wednesday evening. KEY News has learned the missing sailor is a resident of France and the French Consulate will be meeting with officials in Santa Barbara this afternoon. KEY News is continuing to the monitor the situation and will have more information on Thursday's search efforts as it becomes available.
A small boat with two passengers, capsized off Leadbetter Beach throwing both passengers into the water with only one making it to shore. A 27 year old male wearing a wetsuit is still unaccounted for. Firefighters were on the scene within 6 minutes searching the coastline heading east with the ocean's current. Santa Barbara City Fire Captain Chris Mailer has told KEY News that an extensive land and water based search with 3 boats and 14 fire officials on shore is underway. The missing man was conscious and uninjured at the time of the incident and said to be a strong swimmer with the current heading East. Around 8:20 on Wednesday evening, Search and Rescue deployed a helicopter to inspect the surrounding areas. KEY News is on scene and will have more details on this developing story. |
