Ventura County to Remove Beached Whale

Kyra Jenkins

Ventura County parks are working on a plan to discard of the California Grey Whale that washed ashore on Sunday.
The 45-foot whale straddled in front of private property in the Sea Cliff Community. Authorities didn't know who was responsible for removing the huge deceased mammal until today. Ventura County Parks says although the homes are private property, a beach cannot be.

Ventura County Parks Department plans to have the whale removed by Friday. They will start the process during low tide on Thursday and
load the remains unto a truck, which will be taken to a trash dump on Friday.

Authorities say the removal process isn't cheap.
Last time a blue whale had to be moved it cost the county $20,000.

Biologists say the whale has been dead for an estimated 3 weeks.
Gray whales annually migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel on their way to Alaska.
Last year, two blue whales beached nearby on the Rincon coast.
Officials believe those whales had been struck by ships and died as a result of the collision.
