Child Survives Plane Crash, Three Killed

John Palminteri

Rescue crews searching for a missing plane carrying a local family have recovered one injured child and three bodies on Christmas Day.
The plane went down while flying from Islas Secas to a volcano Sunday night. Well-known Montecito businessman Michael Klein, his daughter and the Panama Pilot aboard the plane died in the crash.
Talia Klein brought her girlfriend, Francesca Lewis, of Santa Barbara who survived and is recovering from minor injuries.

Francesca's mother says the girl can walk, but has apparently
suffered a broken arm and hypothermia.
Francesca was wearing a neck brace and had one arm bandaged when she met her family at the hospital. The girl's mother says
Francesca had been able to speak with her father by phone earlier
today. She was able to say, 'Hi, daddy. See you soon,' according to the Associated Press.

Klein's ex-wife told The Associated Press that bad weather and other obstacles were preventing rescue crews from looking for the plane, which may have crashed in the western province of Chiriqui.

Michael Klein was aboard the Cessna 172, with the two teenagers and a Panamanian pilot, Edwin Lasso.

The flight normally would have taken about 45 minutes, but controllers lost contact with the craft at about noon on Sunday.

Michael Klein, 37, is the chief executive officer of Pacificore LLC, a Santa Barbara-based company that manages several hedge funds. He was on vacation with Talia, his 13-year-old daughter, and her 12-year-old friend at Islas Secas, an eco-resort that he owns, Kim Klein said.

She said the group was scheduled to return to California on Christmas Eve.
