LocalBikes Verses Cars, Part I
The battle for road space between cars and bikes is a problem you can find throughout the area whether you are in Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo.
The national highway traffic safety administration statistics show in the four year period between 2002 to 2006 there were five fatal accidents in San Luis Obispo involving bicyclists. In Santa Barbara County there were six fatal accidents and in Ventura County there were 25 fatal accidents. For a community that has put so much effort into trying to get people out of their cars there is still a two wheel vs four wheel conflict that occurs all too often on our streets where bikes and cars have to share the road. Drivers say bike riders rarely follow the rules of the road and bike riders say drivers aren't respecting their right to the road. One of the biggest complaints about bike riders has been the way some ignore stop signs and red lights KEY NEWS Reporter John Palminteri brings you the story from both sides of the wheel. |
