SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Many celebrated the grand opening of the largest housing community for seniors in Santa Barbara.
Villa Santa Fe was first built in 1975 and was known as SHIFCO (Senior Housing Interfaith Corpration). Forty years later, the units received a well-deserved makeover. The $39 million project replaced all windows, floors, appliances and plumbing.
Villa Santa Fe Apartments consists of a total of 167 senior apartments in two locations in Santa Barbara: 521 N. La Cumbre Road and 418 Santa Fe Place.
"The residence that I talked to love the changes and they appreciate the upgrades. I think it's important for a community to honor its seniors in any which-way it can and allowing them to live independently in a way they can afford is a big piece of that. They have given to their community for decades, and now it's our turn to give back," said Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider.
The one-bedroom apartments include full kitchens, bathrooms, washer and dryer hook-ups, and private patios or balconies. Amenities include laundry facilities, carports with storage, community garden space and a newly refurbished recreation room.
