SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - As we begin the new year, NewsChannel 3 took a look back at the top stories that shaped 2013.
Not everyone has time to sit down and watch the news or even log on to a computer to check the NewsChannel 3 website. Smartphones and mobile devices have become a way for viewers to stay up to date with local news.
For the first time, NewsChannel 3 decided to tally the number of times viewers clicked on stories while on the go.
11. Dos Pueblos yearbook
We start out countdown with a high school taking a yearbook into the digital age.
Dos Pueblos created an interactive yearbook where pages come to life with the use of smartphones and mobile devices.
10. Downtown chase
A wild chase through downtown Santa Barbara ended with a 19-year-old behind bars.
After running red lights and swerving through traffic, the chase ended with the driver crashing onto the sidewalk.
No one was hurt.
9. Brian Tacadena
Many people turned to their mobile devices to learn more on the late night officer involved shooting where Tacadena was killed after confronting a police officer with a knife.
Whitnesses said they heard up to five gunshots.
8. Isla Vista earthquake
A 4.9 magnitude earthquake near Isla Vista made people grab their phone to see what was going on.
7. Edwin Garcia
Garcia, 15, was hit and killed by a train in Goleta.
The community rallied behind the family to help pay for funeral expenses.
6. Paul Walker
The untimely death of Fast and Furious actor and Santa Barbara resident had many people searching online for answers.
Walker was killed in a fiery car crash. He was 40 years old.
5. Isla Vista Halloween
As thousands of people piled into Isla Vista for Halloween, many people read about the October parties.
After 225 people were arrested, many residents pitched in to clean up the mess.
4. Goleta pedestrian fatal
Shuguang Lui, 59, was killed while crossing the street in Goleta.
She was pushing a stroller at the time and the toddler was seriously injured.
It happened in an intersection neighbors had been asking city leaders to improve.
3. Mallory Dies
Mallory Dies, 27, was hit by a car while crossing the street in downtown Santa Barbara.
She died days later.
Raymond Morua, an aide for Congresswoman Lois Capps at the time, was charged with murder. He was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
2. Khalid Hurst
The former Santa Barbara High School football player, 36, was killed after crashing his motorcycle.
He was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger made a full recovery.
1. White Fire
The top story on mobile devices in 2013 racked up more than 50,000 views.
The White Fire burned nearly 2,000 acres on Memorial Day. The flames charred the Los Padres National Forest.
Hundreds of canyon residents, campers and day-use groups had to be evacuated from the sites off Paradise Road.
